The Eastern campus is a very diverse cultural environment. With students from several different countries, student services decided to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. They did this by having a movie on the lawn.
The movie played was “McFarland USA.” This movie is about a coach who moves into predominantly Latino California’s Central Valley to coach a cross-country running team. As he trains the students, they have to fight against not only the competing schools but the standards and expectations set for them.
While students enjoyed the movie, authentic Hispanic snacks and refreshments were provided—things such as Aquas Frescas, Horchata, Mexican sweetbread and various Hispanic candies. The Aquas Frescas, which is a mix of sugar, water and different fruits, was gone by the end of the night. The Horchata is made out of rice, water, cinnamon and vanilla. There were mixed reactions as students sampled everything.
The event was sponsored by EOSC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. During the movie, PTK also had a table set up for voter registration. The voter registration drive is from Sept. 24- Oct.9.
Around twenty students came by and either registered or showed their voter identification. By doing this, students can get bonus points in some classes and get their names in a drawing for $50.
The next Movie on the Lawn will be Thursday, Oct. 26. This movie will be sponsored by the Arts & Humanities Club. The movie played will be “Night of the Living Dead.” All students and faculty are welcome to attend.
