Eastern Oklahoma State College’s meat judging team has had an impressive season. They’ve consistently placed in the Top 10 at every competition they’ve attended, earning them a spot at Nationals. These consistent wins led them to Nationals, where they won first place by a 40-point margin.
“I’m really proud of this team,” coach Jade Edwards said. “We look forward to many more of these (wins) at Eastern.”
The meat judging team prepared for competition by spending hours in the freezer. They would study different carcasas and cuts of meat before practice runs of judging.
Another win for Eastern was team member AJ Brown of Marlow making the All American team. Only eight students made the team out of the division.
This year’s meat judging team is made up of Brown, Kace McDonald (Battiest), Brett Hoffman (Poteau) Quincy Mason (Jenks) and Joslyn Gonzalez (Yukon).
The win marks the first national title for the program since its return in 2020. Eastern’s victory came over not only other junior colleges, but also over major four-year universities including the University of Georgia and Washington State University. Nationals were held on Oct. 29 in Friona, Texas.
