Statesman goes Digital

This year the Statesman decided to go purely digital, changing the way campus was delivered every month. The decision was made for information to easier to share with students at Eastern Oklahoma State College. It kept its once a month tradition by things from the previous month being posted the first Friday of every month. Videos and social media were incorporated to make the paper interactable, like McAlester News Capital.

Academic & Foundation Scholars Reception

The annual Academic & Foundation Scholars Reception took place Aug. 20, 2019 on Eastern Oklahoma State College’s Wilburton campus. 180 scholarships were awarded for the 2019-20 academic year. Students from Wilburton, McAlester, Idabel and Antlers came to be awarded their scholarships. 90 students received academic-based institutional scholarships and tuition waivers totaling $111,000 while 138 students received Eastern Development Foundation totaling $245,000.

E-Gaming

This semester a new organization called e-Gaming came to Eastern. E-Gaming is a branch of eSports, which is showing up in more colleges and universities. The organization meets up every Monday at 7:00pm in Mitchell 109. The organization does not only just play games but socializes amongst each other. There are hopes that the organization will be able to join eSports and have opportunities for scholarships for students.

New Dean of Agriculture

Larriann Livingston became Eastern Oklahoma State College’s Dean of Agriculture over this last summer. During her time at Eastern, she double majored in Agribusiness and Agricultural Communications for associate degree. She furthered her education at Oklahoma State College by getting her master’s degree with International Agriculture. Livingston took over the Dean of Agriculture position after the Spring 2019 semester when the last position holder, Eddie Woods, retired. She is also the coach for Eastern’s soils judging team.

President Dr. Stephen Smith Announcing his retirement

President Dr. Stephen Smith informed the Board of Regents the 2019-20 academic year would be his last year at working Eastern after 15-years and being president of the college for 13-years. The Board of Regents is in the process of finding a new President and the job opening they have posted online will be open until January.

2019 Homecoming

Eastern’s Homecoming took place from November 5 to November 9. Over the week, there were many activities throughout the week that led up to the homecoming ceremony. The homecoming king and queen were Kolby Catgo and Cassidy Floyd. Softball and Cheer were tied for the spirit stick and did a tiebreaker, which lead to softball winning the spirit stick. Gear-Up won the faculty spirit stick.
