TRiO offers support in several different ways

By NICHOLAS DUNBAR, Staff Writer

TRiO Student Support Services is an organization at Eastern located on the first floor of Johnston Hall specializing in helping students succeed. Their main goal is to prepare students not only for on-campus but for larger universities and/or beginning their careers.

SSS is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, allowing them to offer a range of services to help. Services are offered in groups or on your own if preferred, making sure you get the help you need.

Individual tutoring and group study halls are available. Tutoring is good to help you understand, and having a study hall to socialize and talk about your work will make it seem less stressful.

Academic advising and counseling are essential in college. Luckily, SSS provides it. If you’re unsure about what classes you need to take or what career path you want, they can help guide you in the right direction. They also assist in filling out financial aid and scholarship applications and transfer forms. Campus tours to various colleges are planned each semester.

Many workshops are provided by SSS to ensure student success. The workshops are offered various times during the semester and focus on a variety of topics to help in a range of areas.

Cultural events and trips are a big part of SSS, providing a fun way to learn about some things you may never have before. At least one of these is planned each semester and covers a wide range of topics.

A new service at SSS is the food pantry and clothes closet, but more information is coming soon. SSS is free if you qualify and can really help anyone struggling with any situation. To see if you qualify, check out the Student Support Services page on the website.
